Poetry: in Voice/in Print: Nebraska Book Festival Kick-off event July 14, 6-8pm

Poetry: in Voice / in Print is the opening celebration gathering of the Nebraska Book Festival at Constellation Studios, Friday July 14, 6-8pm, with summertime refreshments and a signature cocktail. Featured is the recently launched publication Nebraska Poetry: A Sesquicentennial Anthology, 1867-2017, edited by Daniel Simon, and published by SFASU Press.   Poems by historic authors Loren Eiseley and Shirley Buettner will be read by this year’s winner and runner-up from the state Poetry Out Loud contest, Bailee Laws (Lincoln) and Thomas Bosmeniel (Seward).   And selected poems by these authors will be on the letterpress in handset metal type for printing a keepsake on handmade paper.   Additional readings by poets Twyla Hansen, Daniel Simon, Grace Bauer and Benjamin Vogt will be presented.   Also available will be fine press books with poetry and art on view and for sale.   Please RSVP online at: http://bookfestival.nebraska.gov/2017/index.aspx


Guided Tour and Printing Activity ‘Unfolding the Map’

Join us at the studio for afternoon conversation and exhibition viewing of Unfolding the Map.   Print your own letterpress keepsake on handmade paper using the Vandercook Press!   Thursday March 30, 3:30 – 5:00.    This exhibition compliments the 2017 Great Plains Symposium “Flat Places, Deep Identities: Mapping Nebraska and the Great Plains”.  Special welcome to  symposium participants!


Letterpress/Poetry Connection Reception & Dialogue

Join a gathering of poets and printers at Constellation Studios on Sunday, March 13 between 3:30 and 5 p.m. to celebrate the letterpress/poetry connection with light refreshments, broadsides and books to view and collect, and poets and printers available to discuss their work. The reception, open to the public, follows a 2 p.m. reading by poets Steve Langan, Laura Madeline Wiseman, and Bradford Tice at the Bennett Martin Library. (See the CIty of Lincoln Libraries John H. Ames Reading website for more information.)  Printers featured will be Denise Brady of Gibraltar Editions, Karen Kunc of Blue Heron Press, Bonnie O’Connell and Harry Duncan’s works for UNO’s Abattoir Editions, and works from Gold Quoin Press, Peoria. The Letterpress will be set for printing a small keepsake!

On February 27th, Constellation Studios teams up with writers Katie Schmid Henson and Katie Pryor to host an evening of poetry and visual art. Doors open at 6:00pm, reading begins at 7:00pm, and an art raffle featuring donated work from local and UNL graduate artists will take place at 8:00pm. All proceeds will benefit The Family Literacy Program, supported by the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools. Karen will also have the letterpress rolling out a few poems from the evening for guests to take home. Featured readers include Belinda Acosta, Katie Pryor, and Kim Tedrow. Letterpress Workshop with Bonnie O’Connell

Join for the lore of the letterpress, and to print cards from old cuts and type with printer extraordinaire Bonnie O, professor of art from UNO.

This is a workshop useful to get the basics for creating handmade cards, wedding invitations, handbill poster, and programs.

Bonnie O’Connell is professor from UNO who earned her masters from the University of Iowa. She has a thirty year background in literary fine printing and mixed media letterpress works on social and art issues.
